Phone Rules
My friends and family know that I do not look at my phone when I'm out with them. If I'm out with anyone and they keep looking at their phone, I say in a very sweet and loving way "You'll notice that I rarely look at my phone when I'm with you. This is because I value and treasure my time with you. Please show me the same respect. This usually nips it in the bud, and I seldom have to say or do anything else.
But if they continue to look after I've said this, I'll gently touch their hand and repeat it. If they STILL continue to look at their phone (and they don't have a good reason for doing so), I'll say "I love you, but I won't tolerate disrespect. Please call me when you're ready to spend quality time together," and then I get up and leave!
I've only had to resort to that tactic once. Now when I'm out with people I care about, we have better one-to-one communication and no unnecessary distractions. We have to be willing to let people know how we feel and then be willing to enforce it if they can't respect our wishes.
