December 15, 2014A Tip for Daughters-In-Law from a Daughter-In-Law
Hi, Dr. Laura!
Thank you for your wisdom regarding the mother/daughter-in-law relationship. Even though my wonderful husband and I have only been married 18 months, I have struggled in my relationship with my mother-in-law; you know, the usual oversensitivity and feeling intimidated by her. After our sweet daughter was born four months ago, everything already under the surface bubbled to the top. I found I was spending so much energy being offended and annoyed, it was exhausting!!
Your advice has really opened my eyes to the things I can do to make our relationship less tense. I realized the mother-in-law relationship is another opportunity to be my husband's girlfriend. While we were dating, I never said anything negative about his mother or family, and did my best to make a good impression. Since trying this out, I find myself happier, lighter, and able to shake off the things that would normally get under my skin. And instead of spending my time being intimidated, I spend my energy being sweet. It makes me feel more loving toward my mother-in-law.
So, yup! Thank you again for your wise advice. Gotta go, the baby is awake!
